What To Wear For Your Engagement Session

If you’ve read my Wedding Client Guide, you know how I feel about engagement sessions. They are so super important on the wedding journey. Engagement sessions ensure you and your fiancé are comfortable in front of the camera and knowledgable of the many tips and tricks that give us the best photographs possible.

With that said, your engagement session attire is a very big decision! Wedding dresses and tuxedos just seem to go together so easily. Engagement session outfits are something you have to choose.. & choose wisely!

Let’s go over some of the do’s and don’ts for searching your closet (or hitting the racks) for the perfect complimentary outfits.

COLORS

I will always and forever suggest pastel colors for photographs, regardless of the season. Late fall and winter, burgandys and navys are welcome. Nothing too dark that dulls your eyes, hair, or complexion. And think about what color makes your eyes pop, too!

Blushes & Roses, Lavenders & Periwinkles, Baby Blues & Grays, Ivorys and Tans

PATTERNS

Simplicity speaks wonders here. If one of you has a pattern on your attire, the other should stay very simple. Too many patterns can really distract from the focus of you two as a couple.

SHOES

Clean shoes is obvious, but the type is the real head scratcher. If we are going on an adventurous engagement session, you will dress appropriately for that.

‘City & Garden Vibe’ sessions call for high heels. High heels really accentuate your curves in the best way and elongate your legs! Not a high heel person? Upscale sandals will do the trick.

A day on the farm or in the field can still be a call for high heels, but your sweet cowgirl boots could do the trick. And I am ALL about the barefoot vibes when you want those intimate dancing under the stars type photographs.

Winter: bring on the knee high boots or cute little booties!

Men, those nice leather shoes go great with the sharp outfit your fiancé has chosen for you. The key element for you guys are the socks! Please, please, please wear formal socks matching your outfit! No crazy socks or ankle socks that will show in your photographs when you are sitting down or dipping your bride to be for a kiss.

JEWELRY

Ladies, bring that bright & beautiful ring on your left hand, polished and ready to shine! A simple bracelet will go a long way, as well. Nothing gaudy, nothing too overbearing. Simple earrings that compliment your outfit are a plus, as well! Men, a watch is the perfect extra touch for you.

MAKE UP

Engagement sessions are a time for a little glam! If you are using a hair and makeup artist for your wedding day, this would be a great time to utilize them for a trial. It does not have to be as extreme as wedding makeup, but just enough to still look like your gorgeous self with that extra pop of color to bring out your features in the photographs.

To All My Brides & Grooms,

this blog is meant to be a guide and a helpful tool when preparing for your engagement session. But you are all unique and special in your own way! Please don’t restrain who you are for the "picture perfect” photograph. Be you.
